File Created: January 21, 1996 Norwegian Translator 2.0 for Windows Installation: ============= Under Windows run SETUP.EXE to install the program. For Windows 3.1 and earlier a line must be added to your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file. C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 Internet email: =============== jec@sn.no -- or -- jcrandol@linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us Status: ======= Shareware Version. You can freely distribute this program. Background: =========== This is the shareware version of "the Norwegian Translator" for Windows, which best can be understood as a toolbox for translating between Norwegian and English. The program may be used for several functions and on different levels of understanding of the two languages. The shareware version is limited to a database of 3,000 entries, and the user will not be able to add new words to the database. In every other respect the shareware version would give an insight into how "the Norwegian Translator" works. The registered version has a database of 20,000 entries which gives grammatical description of nouns and the conjugation of verbs in five tenses. A commentary box gives 3 lines per word for comments, i.e. the usage of phrases. Since the program was written primarily for a North-American market, the existing commentaries are written in English, as is also the help files. The user has full access to the database, and can change spelling, grammar and comments to suit personal taste (for example, the user may change "bokmaal" into "nynorsk"), and may also fill the database by adding words, or delete words from the database. As a quick dictionary the program will translate word by word. The user must himself or herself work on the sentence structure, grammar, and phrases, but will in this have the help of the grammatical descriptions, the commentaries, a very short introduction to Norwegian grammar in the help files, and "the picklist," a list of all words in the database, beginning with the same three or more letters. In the middle of a letter in Norwegian it can happen to even the most fluently bi-lingual person that one forgets the translation of a word; write it in English, click a button, and have the word instantly translated to Norwegian. The "Text Editor" is a mini word processing program, which gives many of the editing options which other Windows word processors give (such as printing in different fonts, cut and paste, etc.) It is also possible to take documents and other text directly from other Windows word processors (like Word or Word Perfect), have them translated, and then bring them back into the original word processing program. For users needing more help in learning Norwegian, "the Norwegian Translator" has a vocabulary module. It brings word by word to the screen, in English or Norwegian, asking for the proper translation. It gives the number and the percentage of correct answers, and can be concentrated on the words most frequently missed. If you, after having used and evaluated the shareware version, would like to buy "the Norwegian Translator" Version 2.0, please read and follow the instructions on the shareware registration form located on the main menu of the program. We are pleased to receive questions, and also suggestions about how we may improve the program. ...Crandol Software...
